David Palmer sang lead on two tracks, not Donald Fagen. Fagen’s distinctive voice was initially deemed too unusual by the label, so Palmer handled vocals on “Dirty Work” and “Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me).”

Guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter played on the album before joining The Doobie Brothers. His work on tracks like “Reelin’ In the Years” helped define the album’s sound.
