5 Things to Know About Nicko McBrain’s Iron Maiden Debut
Piece of Mind was Nicko McBrain’s first album with Iron Maiden. He replaced original drummer Clive Burr, who was fired in 1982.
McBrain joined the band just before the album’s recording sessions. He had only a few weeks to learn the songs before entering the studio.
His drumming style brought a more technical and powerful sound to the band. McBrain’s double bass work and fills became a signature on tracks like “The Trooper.”
He had previously played with other bands, including Trust and Streetwalkers. His experience helped him adapt quickly to Iron Maiden’s complex arrangements.
McBrain remained Iron Maiden’s drummer for over 40 years. Piece of Mind marked the start of his long tenure, which lasted until his retirement in 2024.
