Merzbow is the primary noise project of Japanese artist Masami Akita. He has been one of the most prolific and influential figures in harsh noise music since the early 1980s.

The name Merzbow comes from the German artist Kurt Schwitters’ term “Merz.” Schwitters used “Merz” to describe his collage art, and Akita added “bow” to reference the sound of a bow scraping strings.

Akita’s music is characterized by extreme volume, distortion, and feedback. He uses analog synthesizers, tape loops, and custom-built electronics to create dense, abrasive soundscapes.

He has released over 200 albums and collaborations. This massive output spans labels like Relapse Records and Important Records, making him a central figure in noise.

Merzbow’s work often incorporates themes of animal rights and anti-fascism. Akita is a vegan and has used his platform to critique consumerism and authoritarianism through his art.
