Andy Partridge and John Leckie were originally hired to produce Miss America. Creative differences with Mary Margaret O’Hara and her band led to their dismissal.

Partridge, from XTC, brought his distinctive pop sensibility to the early sessions. His style clashed with O’Hara’s experimental approach.

Leckie, known for producing Radiohead and Pink Floyd, was also let go. The band found his production direction incompatible with their vision.

O’Hara and her band ultimately produced the album themselves. This allowed them full control over the unconventional sound.

The firing happened early in the recording process. No material from the Partridge-Leckie sessions appears on the final album.
