5 Facts About John Coltrane’s Soultrane Recording

Soultrane was recorded on February 7, 1958. The session took place at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio was a legendary jazz recording space. Many classic Blue Note and Prestige albums were cut there in the 1950s and 1960s.

The album features Coltrane’s working quartet from that period. Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums joined him.

Soultrane is a hard bop album with strong blues and ballad influences. It includes Coltrane’s early explorations of modal and spiritual jazz.

The title track is a composition by pianist Tadd Dameron. Coltrane’s solo on it showcases his “sheets of sound” approach.
