5 Facts About Grimes' Art Angels Recording Process
Grimes recorded Art Angels at her home studio in Los Angeles after moving there in 2014. She had scrapped an entire year’s worth of earlier work from 2013.
The album was entirely self-produced by Grimes. She played most of the instruments herself, including guitar, drums, and synthesizers.
Grimes abandoned the original 2013 sessions because she felt the music was too dark and personal. She wanted to create something more colorful and upbeat.
The home studio setup allowed Grimes complete creative control. She could experiment freely without label interference or studio time pressure.
Art Angels took roughly two years to complete from the scrapped sessions to the final release. The process involved learning new instruments and production techniques along the way.
