4 Things to Know About XTC’s Psychedelic Alter Ego, The Dukes of Stratosphear

The Dukes of Stratosphear were XTC in disguise. Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory, and Ian Gregory recorded under fake names to parody 1960s psychedelic rock.

The band members used deliberately silly aliases. Partridge called himself Sir John Johns, Moulding went by The Red Curtain, Dave Gregory was Lord Cornelius Plum, and Ian Gregory used E.I.E.I. Owen.

The project was a one-off tribute, not a serious side career. XTC released only two Dukes albums in the 1980s, treating it as a playful homage rather than a lasting split.

The fake names and music were intentionally over-the-top. The aliases and sound were meant to be humorous, not convincing—a knowing wink to fans of the genre.
