4 Things to Know About John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass Album

It was Coltrane’s first album on Impulse! Records Released in September 1961, Africa/Brass marked the beginning of his long association with the label.

The album features a larger ensemble than his usual quartet Coltrane expanded the group to include additional horns and percussion, giving the music a fuller, more orchestral sound.

The title track is a 16-minute modal exploration “Africa” showcases Coltrane’s growing interest in African rhythms and extended improvisation.

It was recorded in two sessions with different lineups The first session included Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and flute, while the second added more brass and reeds.
