4 Things to Know About Jacques Levy and Bob Dylan's Desire

Jacques Levy was a theater director, not a songwriter, before collaborating with Bob Dylan. He co-wrote most of the songs on Dylan’s 1976 album Desire.

Levy co-wrote “Hurricane,” the album’s famous protest song about boxer Rubin Carter. He also co-wrote “Isis,” a narrative-driven track with a mythical theme.

The collaboration was brief but productive, spanning only a few months in 1975. Levy’s theatrical background influenced the storytelling in the lyrics.

Levy’s contribution is often overlooked in discussions of Dylan’s work. He is the only co-writer on a full Dylan album from that era.
