Miles Davis recorded the album over three sessions in 1959 and 1960. The sessions took place on November 15 and 20, 1959, and March 10, 1960.
All recording was done at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City. This studio was known for its excellent acoustics.
The album was released on July 18, 1960, by Columbia Records. It remains one of Davis’s most celebrated collaborations with arranger Gil Evans.
